🎵 Coat Of Many Colors

Today I’m playing a Dolly Parton classic, released as a single 54 years ago on this date, October 30, 1971. I agree with what Rolling Stone wrote about Dolly and this song: "Had it been the only song she'd ever written, the expression of overwhelming pride and crushing anguish ... would have secured her indelible legacy."

Also, did you know there’s a final, unrecorded verse to the song? The words are listed in the liner notes but never made it onto the record. I’d imagine that now, half a century later, these words are even more true for Dolly, and for anyone who carries with them a lifetime of memories.

“Through life I've remained happy and good luck is on my side.
I have everything that anyone could ever want from life.
But nothing is as precious as my mama's memory,
and my coat of many colors that mama made for me.”
